Dr. Ivan Sascha Sheehan, Associate Professor of Public and International Affairs, is serving as a consultant on national team of faculty in a Department of Homeland Security sponsored cybersecurity initiative to promote learning through simulation and curriculum design. Dr. Sheehan, a Project Director for the initiative, is contributing to the national expansion of the cyber discovery program through his participation in the content-creation seminars that involve scenario generation.

A series of meetings facilitated by the Cyber Innovations Center/National Integrated Cyber Education Research Center, Louisiana Tech University, and key faculty from across the country commenced in December 2015 at the University of Central Arkansas. Additional meetings will continue in spring and summer 2016 at other universities. Follow updates on this grant funded initiative @ www.professorsheehan.com.

Part of a Global Effort to Achieve Newly Adopted Sustainable Development Goals

The University of Baltimore, its College of Public Affairs and the Jacob France Institute in its Merrick School of Business will serve as lead university partner to facilitate a process that articulates Baltimore’s strategies and goals in support of sustainable development.

Baltimore has been selected as a model city for the new USA Sustainable Cities Initiative (USA-SCI). This project, led by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and Climate Nexus, brings together academic institutions and key stakeholders to support the UN’s newly adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—a series of global aspirations and priorities designed to take on major sustainable development challenges. Additional details below.

Jeffrey Sachs, special advisor to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and director of SDSN, believes Baltimore can serve as a trailblazer in demonstrating how the SDGs could work for cities in the United States, and the importance of addressing social issues, such as race and class and poverty alleviation, along with economic ones.

“I am thrilled to be working with Baltimore and its citizens to build on past successes, to find new, innovative solutions to persistent development challenges, and to support Baltimore to become a leader in the world of sustainable development,” Sachs said.

Dr. Ivan Sascha Sheehan, Associate Professor of Public and International Affairs, received a university-wide nomination for the prestigious 2016 University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents Award in the category of Mentorship. The nomination by Dean of the College of Public Affairs Roger Hartley and President of the University of Baltimore Kurt Schmoke was approved by the University of Baltimore University Faculty Senate and Provost Joseph Wood and will be under review by the University System of Maryland through May 2016.

Dr. Sheehan was the recipient of the 2015 President’s Faculty Award for outstanding contributions related to teaching, research, and service in support of the university’s mission. You can listen to Dr. Sheehan’s remarks at the award luncheon here.

In Fall 2015, Sheehan was also nominated for the distinguished Andrew Carnegie Fellows program – an initiative by the Carnegie Corporation that selects 32 Americans annually to receive grant funding of up to $200,000 to carry out research that addresses current and future challenges to U.S. democracy or international order.

Dr. Ivan Sascha Sheehan, Associate Professor of Public and International Affairs, accepted the 2015 President’s Faculty Award at a luncheon held in his honor on September 9. The President’s Faculty Award is the highest honor bestowed on a faculty member annually. Recipients have made outstanding contributions to teaching, research, and service in support of the university’s mission.

“Dr. Sheehan is a highly regarded faculty member who reflects the University of Baltimore’s highest standards. He is also an outstanding teacher. WHY: Nuclear talks with Iran touched off a fierce debate in Washington over the nature of the accord and its review by Congress. Honoring the legacy of Paul Leventhal, a pioneer of Congressional oversight of nuclear nonproliferation who later highlighted the threat of Islamist Iran and its pursuit of nuclear weapons, this panel will critically examine key aspects of the accord that Congress is to assess under the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015.

As a Senate aide, Leventhal organized hearings leading to the 1978 Nuclear Nonproliferation Act. He then created the Nuclear Control Institute, and subsequently joined the board of the Iran Policy Committee, which Raymond Tanter heads, at its debut conference on 23 February 2005. After Leventhal’s passing in 2007, NCI’s papers were archived at the University of Texas, which established the Nuclear Proliferation Prevention Project and the Leventhal Fellowship.

The NPPP is coordinated by Prof. Alan J. Kuperman, who has written most recently on breakout and proliferation consequences of theIran deal.

Prof. Ivan Sascha Sheehan directs graduate programs in Negotiations and Conflict Management/ Global Affairs and Human Security. The author of several critiques of preemptive force, Sheehan writes and speaks on matters pertinent to congressional oversight of theIran deal, including r egime change from within, the Iran threat, and the main Iranian opposition to a nuclear-armed Iran. Sheehan will assess future scenarios and contingencies for the congressional review.

Writings of Tanter include Arab Rebels and Iranian Dissidents, Iran’s Breakout and Sneakout, and Appeasing the Ayatollahs and Suppressing Democracy.

In June 2015 Dr. Ivan Sascha Sheehan, Associate Professor of Public and International Affairs at the University of Baltimore, traveled to Paris as part of a distinguished research delegation examining the Iranian opposition in the context of the ongoing P5+1 nuclear negotiations with the Iranian regime.

A guest of the organizing committee, Dr. Sheehan met with a series of elected officials while at the meeting to discuss U.S.-Iran policy and his research on regime change.

The annual conference – which featured crowds estimated at 100,000 – is the largest annual gathering of the democratic Iranian opposition in exile. The June event featured remarks by leaders from more than fifty countries, a bipartisan delegation of U.S. policymakers, and prominent academics from around the world. The ongoing nuclear negotiations between the P5+1, democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and the deteriorating situation in neighboring Iraq were discussed.

Dr. Ivan Sascha Sheehan, Associate Professor of Public and International Affairs at the University of Baltimore, was selected by President Kurt Schmoke to receive the 2015 President’s Faculty Award for outstanding contributions related to teaching, research, and service in support of the university’s mission. The $5,000 award is the highest honor bestowed on a faculty member annually. Recipients of the award are required to have a record of excellence in teaching, research, scholarly activity, and service. “Dr. Sheehan is a highly regarded faculty member who reflects the University of Baltimore’s highest standards. In his time at the University of Baltimore he has published six scholarly articles, a book, a peer-reviewed book chapter and many other chapters and research monographs. His numerous works and presentations have significant impact on the fields of terrorism and counterterrorism, insurgency, conflict management and political oppression. He is also an outstanding teacher. In a letter submitted in support of his nomination, Dr. Larry Thomas – former Dean of the College of Public Affairs – indicated that ‘…his student evaluations are among the highest that I have seen during all my years serving both as a faculty member and as an administrator at the university.’”

Dr. Sheehan is the Director of the graduate programs in Negotiations & Conflict Management and Global Affairs & Human Security in the College of Public Affairs at the University of Baltimore.
