In the first three weeks of 2018, Dr. Ivan Sascha Sheehan – Associate Professor of Public and International Affairs – published six op-eds in prominent news outlets, including Fox News and The National Interest. In summer and fall 2017, Dr. Sheehan also authored seven additional op-eds that circulated in Washington’s policy community and raised themes subsequently picked up by prominent U.S. officials in public remarks and prior to important votes. In November 2017, Sheehan also spoke at the National Press Club at an event with Senator Joseph Lieberman.

*The National Interest is the leading journal associated with the realist school of foreign policy and is published by the Center for the National Interest, chaired by Henry Kissinger. The article, which was a leading article at the magazine during the 2018 Iran uprising, was coauthored with University of Michigan Professor Emeritus Raymond Tanter, who served on the National Security Council senior staff in the Regan White House. The article was subsequently translated into Farsi by Voice of America – Iran (VOA Farsi).

In winter 2017, Dr. Sheehan was also profiled in a magazine article titled Professor Ivan Sascha Sheehan Zeroes in on Conflict Both at Home and Abroad.

Dr. Sheehan is the Vice Chair of the Board at the American Committee on Human Rights (formerly known as the Iran Policy Committee). The organization, which educates policymakers on U.S. Iran policy, is made up of senior former White House, State Department, Pentagon, and CIA officials, as well as scholars from think tanks and academia. Sheehan’s scholarship, policy-oriented writing, and media appearances have been influential in shaping Washington’s thinking on the prospect of a democratic transition in Iran.

Dr. Sheehan is scheduled to appear at the Policy Studies Organization’s 2018 Middle East Dialogue this spring and anticipates presenting at the 2018 annual conference of the American Political Science Association in the fall.

On June 27, 2017, Dr. Ivan Sascha Sheehan – Associate Professor of Public and International Affairs – delivered an invited keynote address at the 6th Annual Meeting of Cercle Grand Paris de l’Investissement Durable / Grand Paris Alliance for Metropolitan Development, an independent Paris-based think-tank. The international meeting – held at Deloitte headquarters in France – was sponsored by Deloitte Consulting LLP and Suez and attended by academics, civic leaders, NGO’s, business leaders, and elected officials. Dr. Sheehan’s address was profiled in Le Journal Du Grand Paris.

In advance of the annual forum, Dr. Sheehan co-authored an article in Citiscope with colleagues from Paris and Morocco titled Why the World Needs a Metropolitan Compact: A New Vision for the Future of Sustainability.

A generation ago, the United Nations launched the Global Compact, an effort to connect sustainability with private-sector entrepreneurism. Today, it is the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, involving more than 12,000 signatories from over 160 countries.

The creation of the Global Compact was a landmark event in that it signalled the international community’s recognition of the need for a broad-based, multi-stakeholder approach to sustainability. Using that idea, we are now calling for new global recognition of one of the most powerful trends shaping worldwide systems today: metropolitanization. We call this new vision the Metropolitan Compact.

A new 84 page report released by the University of Baltimore articulates how the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be localized to support a more sustainable Baltimore. Mayor Catherine Pugh endorsed the initiative when she took office in December 2016. “As you will read in this report, the indicators reflect the range of work that is already being done in Baltimore, challenge us to push further, and connect us to a global effort,” said Mayor Pugh in the report’s foreword. “Every urban university has a special responsibility to support and advance the communities in which it resides,” said Kurt L. Schmoke, president of the University of Baltimore. “At UB, we are sharing our expertise in the growing field of sustainability, serving as a gathering place for information, trends and planning efforts. In time, this hard work will help to deliver a Baltimore that is more livable, equitable and, most importantly, a city that thrives in the 21st century.” A link to the full report, which includes ways to get involved and details about each of the Baltimore SDGs, is available on UB’s Sustainable Cities Initiative website.

Baltimore was selected as a model city for the Sustainable Cities Initiative, a global effort to bring together academic institutions and key stakeholders to support the UN’s SDGs—a series of global aspirations and priorities designed to take on major sustainable development challenges.

The University of Baltimore, its College of Public Affairs and the Jacob France Institute in the Merrick School of Business served lead university partners in the effort to facilitate a process that articulated Baltimore’s strategies and goals in support of sustainable development and a framework for setting targets. Baltimore was selected as a model city for the new USA Sustainable Cities Initiative (USA-SCI). The project, facilitated by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), was funded by the Kresge Foundation via Columbia University, and brought together academic institutions and key stakeholders to support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—a series of global aspirations and priorities designed to take on major sustainable development challenges.

Jeffrey Sachs, special advisor to the UN Secretary General and director of SDSN, believes Baltimore is serving as a trailblazer in demonstrating how the SDGs can work for cities in the United States.

“I am thrilled to be working with Baltimore and its citizens to build on past successes, to find new, innovative solutions to persistent development challenges, and to support Baltimore to become a leader in the world of sustainable development,” Sachs said.

SHEEHAN | Iran’s Assault on Academic Freedom | The Hill | Op-Ed | 11 September 2016

On the 15th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, Dr. Ivan Sascha Sheehan – Associate Professor of Public and International Affairs – weighs in at the congressional newspaper The Hill to call attention to the importance of “Academic Freedom” and to highlight its importance to democratic discourse in the Middle East. Learn more about the valuable work undertaken by the US-based organization Scholars at Risk, a network of individuals and academic institutions that promotes the principles of academic freedom around the globe.

Excerpts via @TheHill: In totalitarian societies, power is maintained in part by the control of memory and reinvention of the past. While all societies promote a collective history, totalitarian states tend to advocate a single authorized version. In contemporary Iran, revolutionary ideology and memory itself has been reconstructed to erase any trace of the role of democratic-leaning students and academics in creating an official narrative that implies that the revolution was not about freedom or rights but only about Islamic identity. Recovering silenced accounts of the past has the potential to challenge dominant narratives and become a tool for advocates for change…

…As the world pays tribute to the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, it is important for U.S. officials to champion the freedom to think, write and teach freely and consider all of the implications this has for the development of tolerant and pluralistic societies. By supporting academic freedom as a universal commitment, U.S. leaders can make a small contribution toward a more democratic discourse in the Middle East and uphold a basic value too often taken for granted in the West. #PDF

As the United Nations General Assembly gets underway, Dr. Ivan Sascha Sheehan, Associate Professor of Public and International Affairs, weighs in at Al Jazeera on the human rights situation in Iran and the unique opportunity before world leaders.

Excerpts:

“The Iranian regime continues to execute its citizens at a higher rate than any U.N. member state. In fact the regime boasts the highest rate of executions per capita in the world, surpassing even China. More than two thousand have been executed on President Hassan Rouhani’s watch in just two years, more than in any similar period in the past twenty-five years.

Robert Kagan of the Brookings Institution makes the case that regime change in Teheran is the “best nonproliferation policy.” But regime change from within may also be the best strategy to uphold human rights.

U.S. President Barack Obama makes a mistake by treating Tehran as a fixture of the Middle East landscape but other U.S. officials need not make the same mistake. International law does not simply guarantee sovereignty. It upholds human rights. States are instruments of and by the people, not the other way around.”
