Sheehan Invited to Paris to Attend Annual Conference for Democratic Change in Iran

On June 22, Dr. Ivan Sascha Sheehan will travel to Paris as a guest of the Organizing Committee for the Convention of Democracy in Iran to serve as an academic observer at an international gathering of expatriate Iranians. The event will feature remarks from leaders from more than fifty countries, a bipartisan delegation of U.S. policymakers, and distinguished academics from around the world. Dr. Ivan Sascha Sheehan will participate in a roundtable discussion with Ambassador Lincoln P. Bloomfield, Jr. at The Stimson Center in Washington, DC on June 13 to examine findings from a new study titled The Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK): Shackled by a Twisted History. The invitation only discussion will include a group of former government officials and Iran experts who will look at how information and intelligence about the Iranian opposition led to assumptions and judgments that may have constrained policy formulation over time. The roundtable will also address how evolving policy doctrines on terrorism and human rights affect the case.

Dr. Ivan Sascha Sheehan is presenting a paper at the 2013 Middle East Dialogue, a conference put on by the Policy Studies Organization. The event will be held at the historic Whittemore House in Washington, D.C. on February 21, 2013. The theme for the 2013 conference is Beyond the Arab Spring: New Directions in the Middle East. Sheehan’s paper is titled Challenging a Terrorist Tag in the Media: Framing, the Politics of Resistance and an Iranian Opposition Group. The paper is under review at the Digest of Middle East Studies (DOMES) and conference proceedings may also be published as a monograph.

Dr. Ivan Sascha Sheehan’s statement on the Department of State’s announcement on September 21 that it will remove the Iranian opposition organization, Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK/PMOI), from the Foreign Terrorist Organization list.

“Secretary Clinton’s decision to remove MEK/ PMOI from the Department of State’s Foreign Terrorist Organization list is an important step toward correcting U.S.-Iran policy. The delisting was necessary to ensure that the list remains a credible tool for countering actual terrorist threats and is a victory for those concerned with the protection of civil liberties. The move also sends a clear signal to Tehran that U.S. counterterrorism policy will not be politicized, nor will the Iranian opposition be used as a source of leverage in negotiations. As the Iranian regime expands its arc of influence and closes ranks with Shiite officials in Baghdad, the democratic cause in the Middle East- to which the U.S. has contributed so much- must now shift to the promotion of democratic change in Tehran. Such change is best accomplished from within and U.S. officials must now turn their attention to the protection of opposition members against persecution and back organized efforts to promote grassroots change.”
