Dr. Ivan Sascha Sheehan, Associate Professor of Public and International Affairs, will represent the University of Baltimore at the Association of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) Network for Academic Renewal conference, General Education and Assessment: From My Work to Our Workin New Orleans, Louisiana between February 18-20, 2016. Founded in 1915, AAC&U is the leading national association concerned with the quality, vitality, and public standing of undergraduate liberal education.

AAC&U’s 2016 conference on General Education and Assessment is designed to examine research, evidence, and models for effective general education programs and courses that work for all students.  With focused attention on equity, the meeting will examine effective general education teaching and learning methods,  campus cultures that value and support general education, integrative general education frameworks, and transparent approaches to assessment.

In spring 2016, Dr. Sheehan was appointed by Provost Darlene Brannigan Smith to chair a university-wide Taskforce on General Education. The university-wide committee, which has broad faculty and administrative representation from the Colleges of Public Affairs, Arts and Sciences, and Business as well as the General Education Council and Langsdale Library, will make recommendations for improvements to general education programming in late spring 2016. The proposals for reform will be sent to the constituent college faculty senates and eventually to the University Faculty Senate and senior administration for further consideration and possible implementation in AY 16-17. The taskforce is carefully reviewing Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR)  as well as the latest Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) standards.

Dr. Sheehan is the Director of the graduate programs in Negotiations & Conflict Management and Global Affairs & Human Security in the College of Public Affairs at the University of Baltimore.

USA Sustainable Cities Initiative Launches in Baltimore, with UB Named as Lead University Partner

Part of a Global Effort to Achieve Newly Adopted Sustainable Development Goals

The University of Baltimore, its College of Public Affairs and the Jacob France Institute in its Merrick School of Business will serve as lead university partner to facilitate a process that articulates Baltimore’s strategies and goals in support of sustainable development.

Baltimore has been selected as a model city for the new USA Sustainable Cities Initiative (USA-SCI). This project, led by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) and Climate Nexus, brings together academic institutions and key stakeholders to support the UN’s newly adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—a series of global aspirations and priorities designed to take on major sustainable development challenges. Additional details below.

Jeffrey Sachs, special advisor to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and director of SDSN, believes Baltimore can serve as a trailblazer in demonstrating how the SDGs could work for cities in the United States, and the importance of addressing social issues, such as race and class and poverty alleviation, along with economic ones.

“I am thrilled to be working with Baltimore and its citizens to build on past successes, to find new, innovative solutions to persistent development challenges, and to support Baltimore to become a leader in the world of sustainable development,” Sachs said.

Dr. Ivan Sascha Sheehan is the Director of the graduate programs in Negotiations & Conflict Management and Global Affairs & Human Security in the College of Public Affairs at the University of Baltimore.

On October 30 and 31, Dr. Ivan Sascha Sheehan hosted world-renowned Columbia University Professor of Economics Jeffrey D. Sachs at the University of Baltimore College of Public Affairs. Professor Sachs, the author of three New York Times bestsellers and twice named to Time Magazine’s list of 100 most influential people in the world, discussed an initiative to promote sustainable ‎development in Baltimore in advance of the United Nation’s adoption of global sustainable development goals in 2015.

Special thanks goes to Mr. Johnny J. Mack (President) and Dr. Maneshka Eliatamby (Senior Vice President) of Communities Without Boundaries International (CWBI) who, along with the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UNSDSN), facilitated a series of discussions that involved civil society leaders, academics, students, grassroots activists, and individuals from the private sector.

The summit also involved a meeting with Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, as well as discussions with representatives from the Baltimore City Council. Followup meetings with government officials, academics, and community leaders are currently being planned.
